Haarlem Model United Nations (HMUN) is an annual conference held by students from the Stedelijk Gymnasium Haarlem in the city of Haarlem. Its first edition took place in 1998 and since then it has grown to be attended by a large amount of international students.[1] These students debate pressing world issues and seek solutions whilst simulating the United Nations. During the weekend these students further develop public speaking, knowledge on international affairs and problem solving skills. HMUN's mission is to educate the youth about the world of diplomacy and international relations.
General information and history[edit]
The conference has a long standing history and is one of the first Model United Nation conferences in The Netherlands. HMUN is a THIMUN Affiliated conference and uses THIMUN Rules of Procedure for all debates.[2]
It generally takes place in the month of April and is a three-day conference.[3]
Guest speakers[edit]
Each year the conference begins the conference with a official Opening Ceremony in the St. Bavo Church in Haarlem. In this location all delegates listen to engaging speeches that correlate with the theme of the conference. In the past students got to listen to inspiring leaders like Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the former Secretary General of the NATO.[4]
- 2018 - Kim Putters
- 2019 - Marriët Schuurman
- 2020 - Louise Fresco (Cancelled due to COVID-19)
- 2021 - Jos Wienen
- 2022 - Jaap de Hoop Scheffer
Organisation[edit]
Student officers[edit]
An important part of the conference are the chairs and presidents, or the so called Student Officers. These students give direction to the committees and lead the debate. Every committee has a main-chair and a deputy-chair. HMUN has 40 Student Officers.
Executive staff[edit]
The conference is run by 25 students from the Stedelijk Gymnasium Haarlem. Under leadership of two Secretaries General and 5 Deputy Secretaries General, these students work an entire year to organise the conference. They are specialised in 5 branches: organisation, administration, information, representation and communication. All students range from 14 to 17 years old.[5] [6]
They are under supervision by 5 teachers from the school.[7]
Locations[edit]
What sets HMUN aside from other conferences is that it is hosted in historical locations throughout Haarlem. This makes the diplomatic debates even more realistic for the delegates. For example: in the past years HMUN has hosted part of their conference in Villa Welgelegen, City hall (Haarlem), Frans Hals Museum, Teylers Museum, Courthouse Haarlem, Janskerk and the Grote Kerk.[8]
Committees and councils[edit]
The conference consist out of 19 committees in total. Each of these committees serves a different purpose. In the past committees such as the United Nations General Assembly, the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council have been part of the conference. There have also been committees that are not part of the United Nations such as the G20, the NATO or the IAEA. For more experienced delegates, HMUN offers the International Court of Justice. In this committee students simulate a pending case.[9]
