The Miami Independently Assembled Model United Nations (MIAMUN) conference is a nonprofit bi-annual one-day event for high school Model United Nations students. It is held at International Studies Preparatory Academy in Coral Gables, Florida in fall and spring. It is currently in its second year and approaching its fifth installment.
General information[edit]
MIAMUN began in 2019 as a project of various students from across Miami-Dade county to create an independently assembled student-run Model United Nations conference.[1] In its first year, the conference was attended by approximately 23 high school and middle school delegates. Over the past year, it has continued to grow, with the number of registered delegates increasing by 400 percent by the fall 2019 conference. MIAMUN III expects over 100-120 delegates to be in attendance for the upcoming 2020 conference.
COVID-19 MIAMUN II: Online[edit]
On April 24th, 2020, MIAMUN hosted its first online conference due to COVID-19, where over 30 delegates participated in two crisis committees: The French Revolution of 1789 and the Iranian Cabinet. The decision was made by former secretary-general Alexander Sutton, who reacted to COVID-19 by creating an online conference in replacement of the previously schedule spring event.[2]
Nonprofit[edit]
In January 2020, MIAMUN Inc. officially registered as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization under Veronica Famadas and Irene Jose-Sala in order to donate all proceeds from the conference to the charity of the Secretariat's choice.[3] [4] In previous conferences, proceedings from delegate fees and merchandise sales have been donated to UNICEF in the effort to aid underprivileged children in receiving adequate access to educational resources.[5]
