Haider Ali Chao (Urdu: حیدر علی چاؤ‎; born 13 September 1995), also known as Hyder Chao, is a Pakistani singer, songwriter, composer, and a music teacher. Chao started on Pakistani TV before becoming a notable musician. He got his surname “Chao” from his great ancestors, who were from Tibet, China and later generations moved to the northern areas of Pakistan (Baltistan). So his paternal grandfather was named Haider Chao. Hence the Chinese surname runs in the family. He is renowned by his Chinese surname Chao, and its become his trademark stage name.

Chao started his career as a Singer with his single "Likhna Parhna Kia", which gained popularity and aired on the national music channel ARY Musik.[1] "Likhna Parhna Kia" turned out to be a success, topping many music charts. Alongside his singing career, Chao participates in tours, concerts and stage shows. In March 2020, Chao released his latest song "Khanabadosh" which welcomed with a lot of appreciations on social media.[2]

Early life[edit]

Haider Ali Chao was born on 13 September 1995 in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan to a Balti family. His father, Farman Ali Chao was an accountant, his elder brother Kumail Ali Chao, is a well known Sana Khuwan, and his uncle Munawwar Haider Chao (Mani Chao), is a well-known Classical Dancer.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Chao received his early education from Habib Public School, and went to Karachi Institute of Economics and Technology later. He completed his graduation from the University of Karachi in B.A in Philosophy and Studied Music from the National Academy of Performing Arts.

Career[edit]

Chao started his career as a singer at National Academy of Performing Arts in Karachi, where he performed several shows with renowned music faculties from Pakistan, and as well as around the world. Some of his notable performances include; Base Rock Cafe, Pakistan National Council of Arts, Alliance Française De Karachi, Institute of Business Administration (Karachi), Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, CM House, Mohatta Palace, and for the 'I am Karachi Festival'.

He debuted as a singer by singing "Likhna Parhna Kia", back in 2013. So far, he has written and composed five songs, including his recently released song "Khanabadosh". Also, he was a former vocalist of a band called 'Sounds Of Kolachi', and he has directed a musical Folk night in NAPA International Theater and Music Festival. Currently, he works as a music teacher at The City School.

He has worked with many personalities of the music industry, both emergent and renowned. Local artists include Ustaad Nafees Ahmed, Shallum Asher Xavier, Sir Arshad Mehmood, Sir Mehboob Ashraf, Louis J. Pinto (Gumby), Zoe Viccaji, Natasha Baig, and some Ustaads of Eastern Classical Music (Vocalists and instrumentalists). Along with the Internationally renowned artists like teachers of UT Austin (Butlers School of Music), and Japanese, Italian and Korean Singers and musicians. He has worked with Prodigy Art Studios, Arshad Mehmood's studio, ODS and the studio at NAPA itself.
