Hardballing is a form of dating between men and women that involves the man and the woman being upfront and straightforwardly honest with each other about what their true desires, expectations, interests, and intentions are beginning with their very first conversation. If the man and woman decide after their first date that they are not on the same page (e.g., the man is only interested in a few episodes of short-term non-monogamous casual sex while the woman is more interested in a long-term, emotionally profound, strictly monogamous romantic relationship that will ultimately lead to marriage), then they will mutually agree to part ways without wasting any further time, energy, or money.[1]. The concept was first introduced to the public by former Hollywood actress Cameron Diaz during a guest appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in September 2021.[2] Since then, the concept of hardballing has been mentioned in many articles on the Internet.[3][4][5][6][7]

"Hardballing" is when you treat your dating life like you're running a Fortune 500 company. And you behave as if you are the CEO of that company and you make hard decisions and you make them fast. So anyone who doesn't meet your criteria has got to go with no regrets.

Criticism[edit]

Many of the online articles that reported on the concept of hardballing described it as "a new, revolutionary dating trend that was created by members of Generation Z."[8] The problem is, there are at least two self-help book authors who wrote and published books in the 1990s that describe and endorse interpersonal communication concepts that are virtually identical to the concept of hardballing. One is Dr. Brad Blanton, author of the book Radical Honesty,[9] and another is Dating Coach Alan Roger Currie who is the author of the book Mode One: Let the Women Know What You're REALLY Thinking.[10][11] Currie said, "If you read the various articles about the concept of 'hardballing,' you would get the misleading impression that no one has ever used this type of verbal communication style ever before in life. I personally have been using an upfront, specific, straightforwardly honest style of communication with single women since my college days in the 1980s"[12]
