Harmless Key (HK) is an online combat tracker for Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) 5th edition. The app makes the life of a Dungeon Master (DM) easier by automating a lot of parts of combat, such as tracking Hit Points, Conditions and Effects, Reactions, Concentration and more.

During combat in D&D the DM has to keep track of a lot of things and doing this with pen and paper can be very hard and time consuming. A lot of DMs find combat the most hectic part of D&D.[1], HK offers a solution that makes running combat easier.

History[edit]

Harmless Key was created in 2019 by two Dungeons & Dragons players from Amsterdam who were missing a tool that could help run encounters[2]. Other tools for this purpose did exist at this time, but they felt none of them offered the amount of features they were looking for, so they decided to create one themselves. In January of 2019 a first version went live[3]

On February 18 of 2022 Harmless Key 2.0 was released[4]. With this update the layout was completely changed and a lot of new features were added.

Platforms[edit]

Harmless Key is a browser-based tool that is fully functional on both desktop and mobile devices. It completely runs in the browser so no installation is required.

It is available as a Progressive Web App, this means it can be installed from your browser on your device and used as a stand-alone app.

On September 13, 2021 app versions of HK were released on Google Play and the Microsoft Store[5]. These apps are identical to the web-app that runs in your browser.
