Harmony Blocks (Chinese: 和諧式大廈), sometimes referred as HR, is a design in Hong Kong public housing blocks. Most were built between 1992 and 2009. It is the most widely used design in public housing estates and Home Ownership Scheme estates.

Design[edit]

Harmony blocks are built using mostly prefabrication parts. This speeds up construction time and cuts costs. Sometimes, due to its flexibility, a Wing building may be added. The design can be changed to adjust for demand for small and large units. During construction, changes had also been made. There are three types of Harmony blocks.

First Generation[edit]

Mainly built in 1992 to 1996, first generation Harmony 1 blocks can be found at the following places: Tin Yiu Estate, Tin Yau Court, Tin Shui Estate, Kwong Tin Estate, Tai Wo Hau Estate, On Yam Estate, Hau Tak Estate, Chung Ming Court, Lee On Estate, and Kwai Shing East Estate. Other types include Harmony 1A in Lai On Estate and Harmony 3 in Lower Wong Tai Sin Estate.

Second Generation[edit]

Mainly built in 1996 and 1997, second generation Harmony 1 blocks are an improved version of the first generation. These Second Generation blocks are found in the following places: Kam Peng Estate, Sau Mau Ping Estate, Tsui Ping Estate, Ming Tak Estate, Peng Lai Court, Hin Ming Court, Yuk Ming Court, and Tung Lam Court.

Harmony 1[edit]

Harmony 1 is a cruciform-shaped design. Usually, the height is 39 stories while 41 stories in Ko Yee Estate and Lei Muk Shue Estate. The number of units a Harmony 1 block can have is 16, 18, and 20 units per floor.[2] There are four wings. Each wing can have 4 or 5 units.[3] Due to its flexibility, Harmony 1 is the most built in public housing estates in 15 districts, with exceptions in Tai Po District, Central District, Western District, and Wan Chai District. Wah Tong House in Yau Tong Estate currently holds the record for the most units and total units, with 960 units under 24 units per floor and 40 floors in height. In 2001, it evolved into “New Harmony”.

Harmony 1A[edit]

Harmony 1A is a shortened/dwarfed variant of Harmony 1. Usually, the height of a Harmony 1A block is 14 to 25 floors. It is mainly used in the public housing estates of Kowloon because due to height restrictions by Kai Tak Airport. For example, the height is 13 stories in Lai On Estate, 14 stories in Pak Tin Estate, 20 stories in Ko Chun Court, and 23 stories in Lok Fu Estate. The shape and design is similar to Harmony 1 blocks. Its flexibility is also similar to Harmony 2 and 3 blocks. In 1998, height restrictions are lifted and no more Harmony 1A blocks will be constructed.

Harmony 2[edit]

Harmony 2 is Y-shaped and has 37 stories. It has 18 units per floor.[4] It has 2, 4, or 5 units per wing. There are three wings. Most Harmony 2 blocks are concentrated in Kwun Tong District and the New Territories. They are found in the following estates: Tsui Ping Estate, Tin Shui Estate, Sau Mau Ping Estate, and Tin Yiu Estate. However, due to Harmony 2 taking up more space and has low flexibility, few estates have ever built Harmony 2 blocks. Two Harmony 2 blocks are ever constructed in Home Ownership Scheme estates, which were all in Kam Fung Court.

Harmony 3[edit]

Harmony 3 is a variant of the Harmony block. It is T-shaped and is usually 15-30 stories tall. There is not that much flexibility, but the buildings use 0, 30, 45, 60 and 90 degree variants. The 0 and 90 degree variants can be found in Tsz Ching Estate, Pak Tin Estate, and Ka Fuk Estate. A 45-degree building can also be found in Tsz Lok Estate. Harmony 3 was gradually discontinued due to the height restrictions being lifted due to the closure of Kai Tak Airport.

The last Harmony 3 block was completed in Shek Yan House in Shek Lei Estate. It was originally 20 stories, but was increased to 31 stories. This is one of the tallest Harmony 3 blocks ever constructed. Another Harmony 3 block that is 31 stories tall is in Hung Fai House in Hung Hom Estate.

There is also Harmony 3A, 3B, and 3C variants. They are primarily built to suit to the height restrictions. The shortest one is Harmony 3C. Harmony 3B is also shorter than Harmony 3. Harmony 3B and 3C blocks are usually 11 to 15 stories tall, but it can reach up to 24 stories tall. Few are ever built, with buildings in Pak Tin Estate and Ho Man Tin Estate.

New Harmony 1 & 3[edit]

The main differences between New Harmony 1 & 3 and Harmony 1 is that there are more microunits.[5] The following estates that had adopted New Harmony 1 & 3 are: Choi Ying Estate, Shek Pai Wan Estate, Un Chau Estate, Shek Mun Estate, and Ching Ho Estate.

Harmony Wing[edit]

Harmony Wing is an extra building attached to Harmony blocks.[6][7]

Harmony Wing First Generation[edit]

Harmony Wing has three models. They are built between 1994 and 1997, with a height of 15 - 16 stories. The first variant is a L-shaped one with 10 units per floor. The second variant is V-shaped and has 9 units per floor. Also, the third variant is rectangular but also has 9 units per floor.

New Harmony Wing[edit]

The New Harmony Wing Building is an improved version of Harmony Wing. The height is 21 stories. The L-shaped variant has 8 units per floor. The retangular variant has 7 to 9 units per floor. They are built between 1998 and 2002.

New Harmony Wing 5[edit]

This variant is the same as New Harmony Wing, but completed between 2003 and 2008. The height has increased to 36 stories, more taller than the New Harmony Wing and Harmony Wing. The block is T-shaped, with 11 units per floor. Kwai Chung Estate has the only retrograde-shaped New Harmony Wing 5 block in Hong Kong.

Harmony Rural[edit]

Harmony Rural is mainly used in rural areas where units mimic those of Harmony blocks. Height and units of these blocks may also vary.[8] These type of blocks can be found in Ma Hang Estate, Kam Peng Estate, and Nga Ling Court. Harmony Rural blocks can range from 4 to 10 stories.

Small Household[edit]

Small Household blocks have standard units but have no standard design.[9]
