Harsh Patel is an Indian-American entrepreneur. He is known for co-founding MakerSquare, an Austin-based software engineering school.[1] MakerSquare is projected to generate $2 million to $4 million in revenue in 2014.[2] Since its creation, MakerSquare has over 200 graduates.[3]

Career[edit]

Patel began studying at Saint Louis University in 2006 and graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biology and Mathematics.[4] During Patel’s time studying, he was the President of the Biomedical Engineering Society, a Biomechanics Research Assistant, an Orthopedics Research Assistant and an Emergency Department Research Assistant.[4] Shortly after Patel’s graduation, he got involved in the education sector by teaching 5th graders at the UNO Charter School in Chicago, volunteering at Khan Academy to align curriculums to Common Core state standards, and teaching 5th and 8th graders various subjects at Teach for America in Chicago.[1][2][4] In January 2012, Patel co-founded a nonprofit, Portfoliyo, in New York City, which is a software service that enables teachers to communicate with students over text messaging.[2][5][6] Just a year after co-founding Portfoliyo, Patel began seeking out how to learn web development, and decided to attend a bootcamp in New York City.[2] After his experience at the school, Patel and Shaan Shah, Shehzan Devani and Ravi Parikh decided they could craft a more conducive learning environment and founded MakerSquare in January 2013.[1][2] Patel said “I wanted to create the school I wish I went to.”[1] MakerSquare’s first cohort of students graduated in June 2013.[1] Since MakerSquare’s start in Austin, they have expanded to San Francisco.[7] In September 2014, Patel visited the White House to join a roundtable to discuss getting veterans involved in technology.[8] Patel said “Emerging technology companies often recognize the value skilled military members and veterans bring to the private markets.”[8]
