Roderick Carroll Maxson was an American businessman, radio personality, auto salesman, and hotel owner. He served as the founder of WLDR-FM in Traverse City, Michigan, United States.
Early life[edit]
Maxson was born in 1912 to Ralph Kuth & LaVerta Rhynard in Lostcreek Township, Miami County, Ohio. He dropped out of the 6th grade and didn't go to high school or college.
Career[edit]
Maxson became CEO of Allied Public Risk, an insurance company based out of Chicago. Later, he moved from Ohio to Traverse City, Michigan, and founded WLDR-FM, a country radio station, with Robert L. Greaige.[1] He also owned Grand Traverse Auto for some time in downtown Traverse City.[2] This auto shop closed sometime after 1982, as the building is now used as the headquarters for the Traverse City Record-Eagle. He also opened Cuttysark Harbor on East Grand Traverse Bay, and Sun & Shores Hotel nearby.
Personal Life[edit]
Maxson had 2 wives, Arietta Burgess of Ohio, and Etta Stafford of Paintsville, Kentucky. With Arietta, he had one son, Theodore L. Maxson. With Etta, he had three children: Sandie, Linda, and Carl David.[3] He had 3 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Roderick died on April 1, 2005.
