Harvard University Employees Credit Union (HUECU) is a state-chartered credit union headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The credit union was established in 1939, has more than $600 million in assets[1] over 49.000 members, and operates five full-service branches located in Cambridge, Boston (2), Charlestown, and Somerville. This state-chartered credit union is organized under strict laws monitored and enforced by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Harvard University Employees Credit Union was officially chartered in 1939 and was assigned the NCUA charter number 67696.[2]

History[edit]

Harvard University Employees Credit Union was established in 1939 by a group of employees of the Harvard University for the purpose of providing affordable personal loans to all University faculty and staff. The Harvard University Employees Credit Union charter was also approved in 1939.[2] Since its founding, the credit union has been owned by its members, operated by Harvard employees, and governed by volunteer Directors from the University community. In 1983, the Credit Union’s charter was changed to extend membership eligibility to employees of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), the teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. In an effort to identify and understand the needs of this newly established relationship, HUECU welcomed MGH representation to its Board of Directors. In 2004, the Credit Union amended its by-laws to expand the associations which qualify persons for membership. The amendment relative to membership ability would now include students and alumni of Harvard University and all Harvard Schools, including but not limited to Harvard Medical School (HMS), Harvard Business School (HBS), Harvard Law School (HLS), as well as employees of affiliates of Harvard University.[3] With this change, HUECU quickly became an integral part of campus life and deepened its commitment and connection across the University. In 2007, Harvard University Employees Credit Union continued to expand the associations which qualify persons for membership. The amendment relative to membership eligibility would now include membership for students, alumni, employees and retirees of Lesley University and affiliates of Lesley University.[3]

Operations[edit]

Harvard University Employees Credit Union operates neighborhood branches and ATMs in the Boston and Cambridge area. In April 2017, Harvard University Employees Credit Union announced the upcoming opening of a new, full-service Credit Union branch by joining Partners Healthcare in the group’s new Assembly Row location in Somerville, MA.[4] This new branch was opened the same month. All branches have 24-hour ATMs. In addition, Harvard University Employees Credit Union is a member of the CO-OP Financial Services Shared Branch Network, enabling HUECU’s members to access their accounts and conduct transactions at any other credit union enrolled in the network.

HUECU offers a variety of financial products and services including savings accounts, checking accounts, student loans, credit cards, home loans and auto loans.
