History[edit]

In 1891, Loretto Heights Academy (the neighborhood's first major landmark) was opened by the Sisters of Loretto as a Catholic school for girls. It originally offered education up to high school and, in 1940, became the only four-year women’s college in the region.[2] During World War I, the campus became a training center for women, where students were taught to roll bandages, create surgical dressings, knit, and cook.[3]

Prior to 1950, Harvey Park South was part of Arapahoe County; the neighborhood was fully annexed into Denver by 1973.[2] Starting in 1956, the Hutchinson Homes Company built almost 1,000 of their Century 970, Century 1142, and Century 1255 houses in Harvey Park South.[4][3]

This area, platted as Sharon Park, consisted of single-family homes built in a mid-century modern style of architecture, including homes designed by architect Cliff May.[3] Harvey Park South was further subdivided west of the college. And this new section bore little resemblance to Sharon Park, replacing replacing the traditional grid pattern with curved streets.[2]
