Hatice Karahan is a Turkish economist, scholar, and bureaucrat. Karahan received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Boğazici University in Management and Economics, respectively. She earned her PhD degree in Economics at Syracuse University in 2006.[1] In 2017, she was appointed as senior economic advisor to the President of Turkey.[2] Between 2021 and 2022, she was a visiting scholar at Harvard University[3]. She is currently a visiting scholar at Columbia University.[4]
Career[edit]
Karahan started her academic career at Syracuse University, where she also conducted research for the Center for Policy Research (CPR). After returning to Turkey, she served as an advisor at the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and taught part-time at several universities. She joined Istanbul Medipol University in 2015 as the founding head of the Department of Economics and Finance.
Karahan also served as a consultant for leading business associations in Turkey, including Turkish Exporters' Assembly (TIM), Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey (DEIK), Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO) and Independent Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (MUSIAD).[5]
Between 2014 and 2018, she was an economics columnist for Dünya[6] and Yeni Şafak.[7] In 2016, she was awarded by EBBO the Economics Columnist of the Year.[8]
She was appointed as senior economic advisor to the President of Turkey and a member of the Council of Economic Policies, in 2017 and 2018[9], respectively.
In 2020, she has been awarded Professor of Economics. Between 2021 and 2022, she was a visiting scholar at Harvard University.[3] She is currently a visiting scholar at Columbia University.[4] She is also a member of the Diversity Scholars Network at the University of Michigan.[10]
