Hazrat Ishaan (title)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Standard of the Hazrat Ishaan.

Hazrat Ishaan (Persian: حضرت ایشان; also transliterated as Hazrat Ishaan and Hasrat Eshan) is a title held by the Imām of the family of Hazrat Ishaan, who is simultaneously the spiritual leader of the Naqshbandi Sufi order and the Sayyids. All Hazrat Ishaans claim descent from Muhammad, the last prophet of Islam, through Hasan al Askari, Sayyid Abdul Qadir Gilani and Bahauddin Naqshband.[1]

Title[edit]

According to Yasin Qasvari, a scholar of the Naqshbandi Sufi order, Hazrat Ishaan is an honorary title used by the Khan of Bukhara Abdullah Khan bin Iskander and the Mughal Emperor Akbar to address Khwaja Khawand Mahmud (1563-1642), the contemporary supreme leader of the Naqshbandi Sufi Order. Qasvari and David William Damrel, a professor of religious studies in South Carolina and affiliated with the Pluralism Project at Harvard University further mention that both monarchs were spiritual disciples of Hazrat Ishaan, as he is believed to have rescued Abdullah Khan II during a hunting accident and prayed for Akbar to have a son.[2]

Hazrat is a common Pakistani, Iranian and honorific Arabic title used to honor a person. It literally denotes and translates as "presence, appearance".

Scholars on a program on Hazrat Ishaan I at 92 News mention that "Ishaan" is derived from the Persian term "Shaan" meaning exalted, holy or blessed by God.

Thus Hazrat Ishaan must be translated as "One with the Exalted Presence".[3]

History[edit]

Regarding his popularity in the Mughal court, Khwaja Khawand Mahmud Hazrat Ishaan's son Sayyid Moinuddin Hadi Naqshband married Emperor Jahangir's daughter, bestowing royality on him. Sayyid Moinuddin's grandson in turn married Aurangzeb's daughter. Hazrat Ishaan IX then married an Afghan princess, descendant of Shah Ashraf Hotak, whose daughter married the Afghan Prince Abdul Khalek Khan, who was a pioneer of modern Afghan science, first Afghan alumni at Sorbonne University, becoming the Permanent Ambassador of Afghanistan to the United Nations, cousin and right-hand man of Prince Muhammad Daoud Khan.[4][5]

When Hazrat Ishaan I migrated to Kashmir, he was welcomed as their spiritual patron saint, supported by Mughal emperors. Until today, his descendants are highly esteemed in the Ziyarat Naqshband Saheb. After a Shiite rebellion against Hazrat Ishaan, he was evacuated by Shah Jahan to migrate to Lahore. There Shah Jahan built him a palace, which is his current mausoleum in Begumpura.[6]
