Heather Payne is a Canadian born programmer, angel investor, and entrepreneur. Her self learned coding skills inspired her to found Ladies Learning Code, an initiative to motivate and educate people on computer programming, with an emphasis on empowering woman to pursue opportunities in technological fields. In 2013, Payne withdrew from her role with Ladies Learning Code and began to focus on a similar company she founded in 2012, to expand her workshops and educational tools entitled HackerYou, where she continues to serve as the CEO.[1]

Heather Payne majored in Business Administration at the University of Western Ontario, London. During her last semester of college, she participated in an exchange program in China at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. After graduating in 2009, Payne continued living in China and pursued a Masters program. It is during her time abroad that Heather first delved into coding.[2]

Career and Notable Works[edit]

Heather’s career began with corporate positions. She quickly gained an interest in small business and in 2011, Heather founded the non-profit Ladies Learning Code, an organization that hosts programming and web development workshops aimed at individuals regardless of age nor gender who want to take the initiative to enter into the computer technology field.With Ladies Learning Code gaining vast popularity, Heather decided to step down from her leadership role to pursue a larger initiative for coding workshops by founding her company HackerYou. HackerYou is a private career college specializing in web development and coding programs.[3] They offer nine week boot-camp style classes for intermediate programmers, as well as options for beginners. HackerYou has a 65% female enrollment in most of it's courses.[4] Through her programming workshops, Heather is making strides towards closing the gender inequality in computer-based fields, providing accessible and comprehensible curriculum's, and encouraging women to expand their skill sets.In 2012, Heather began collaborating on a project for the Mozilla Foundation, a non-profit foundation that aims to encourage web based invention,creativity, and participation.[5] Heather's role included organization of a community of entities in the Toronto area that focused upon the empowerment of young people as innovators of computer based technology.
