Minaj's long-time recording engineer Aubry "Big Juice" Delaine said to Rolling Stone about working with Minaj on Queen:

"On "Thought I Knew You," it had to be smooth, something that changed your mood and put you in another place when you listen to it. The sonics have to match the mood that is being sung or rapped about."[2]

After the release of Queen, "Thought I Knew You" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 98, becoming Minaj's 98th entry on the chart.[3] The song also entered the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart at number 49.
