Heba Aly is the CEO of The New Humanitarian (formerly the United Nations' IRIN News) and a leader in conflict journalism.[1]
Aly spent her early career reporting from conflict zones in the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia. She led IRIN's exit from the United Nations into a non-profit newsroom.[1]
She was named a 2018 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.[2] Her public leadership work involves both running The New Humanitarian and advocating for quality news coverage of conflict areas and humanitarian work. She has spoken on many public platforms, including as a TEDx speaker,[3] a PeaceTalks speaker,[4] and publicly in Geneva.[1]
Early life
Heba Aly was born in Ottawa, Canada. She graduated with highest honors and B.S. degrees in journalism and human rights from Ottawa's Carleton University.[5]
Career
As CEO and Director of The New Humanitarian, Aly heads an organization that used to be part of the United Nations, but now functions as an independent media organization. She speaks often on humanitarian policy at government briefings and conferences.[6]
Her journalistic work has extensively covered the African continent. Aly has reported from Senegal, West Africa, and Chad, Central Africa, covering development and conflict in Niger, child trafficking in Nigeria, riots and poverty in Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, floods in Ghana, and displaced refugees from Chad and Sudan.[5] New African Magazine named Aly one of the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2018.[2]
Aly's reporting has appeared or been broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Christian Science Monitor, Bloomberg News and The New Humanitarian, among others.[7]
Awards and honors
Aly received a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting for work in Sudan from 2008 to 2009.[8]
She was named a 2018 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.[2]
Aly was named one of the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2018 by the New African Magazine.[2]
