Heba Zaqout
Heba Zaqout (Arabic: هبة زقوت; 1984 – 13 October 2023) was a Palestinian artist and school teacher in the Gaza Strip.[1] In October 2023 she was killed in the 2023 Israeli bombing of Gaza.[1]
Zaqout was born in Gaza City in 1984.[2] She studied graphic design at the Gaza Training College, and in 2007 graduated in fine arts from Al-Aqsa University.[3][4] A public school teacher, she took part in indoor and outdoor art exhibitions. Her 2021 solo exhibition was entitled 'My Children in Quarantine'.[5] In November 2021 Zaqout participated in the "From Stone to Sea" exhibition held by Dar Qandeel for Arts and Culture in Tulkarm.[6] She collaborated with the poet Mosab Abu Toha on a profile of Palestinian poetry for the magazine Peripheries.[7]
Zaqout primarily worked in acrylics. Her paintings "emphasised Palestinian identity and existence - with bright, joyful landscapes often filled with mosques and churches, minarets and domes."[8]
Zaqout died on 13 October 2023. She and her two young sons were killed by Israeli bombing.[1] Mosab Abu Toha, only learning of her death two months later, announced his intention to share some of her artwork.[7]
