Hector Florez (born 1981) is a Colombian computer scientist and Associate Professor at the Universidad Distrital Francisco Jose de Caldas. He is the founder of the International Conference on Applied Informatics,[1][2] which started in 2018.

Education[edit]

Hector Florez went to the public school Externado Nacional Camilo Torres in Bogota finishing his high school in 1997. In January 1998, he started electronics engineering at the Universidad El Bosque. However, he had the opportunity to study computing engineering as a double degree. Thus, he graduated as an electronics engineer in September 2002 and as a computing engineer in March 2004. Later, he studied a Master in Information and Communication Sciences at the Universidad Distrital Francisco Jose de Caldas and a Master in Management at the Universidad Militar Nueva Granada. In addition, he studied a doctorate in Engineering at the Universidad de los Andes[3] under the supervision of Jorge Villalobos and performed an international research internship under the supervision of Ulrich Frank at the Universitat Duisburg-Essen[4] with a dissertation entitled "Embracing Imperfection in Enterprise Models"

Hector Florez started working as development engineer; however, short time after he achieved his electronics engineering degree, he had the opportunity to be a lecturer at the Universidad El Bosque, Fundación Universitaria Konrad Lorenz, Universidad Distrital Francisco Jose de Caldas, and Universidad de los Andes. In January 2011, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Universidad Distrital Francisco Jose de Caldas[5] and in August 2015 he was promoted to Associate Professor.[6] In addition, currently, he is classified as Senior Researcher of COLCIENCIAS.

Hector Florez is the chair of the research group "ITI: Information Technologies Innovation",[7] which he founded in January 2013. In addition, he is the general chair of the International Conference on Applied Informatics and the main editor of its proccedings[8]

Hector Florez is Academic Peer of the following institutions:

  • Education Ministry of Colombia, where he has evaluated several academic programs of bachelor, specialization, master, and doctorate levels.
  • ICFES, where he has contributed reviewing the Colombian national exams for programs of bachelor degrees.
  • COLCIENCIAS, where he has participated as an external evaluator of several research projects.
