Thomas Ertl (born July 24, 1957 in Bamberg, Germany) is a German computer scientist and since 1999 Professor of Practical Informatics at the University of Stuttgart, where he heads the Institute for Visualization and Interactive Systems (VIS) and the Visualization Research Center of the University.

Biography[edit]

Ertl studied Physics and Computer Science at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg, earned a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Colorado Boulder and a PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Tübingen. His research interests include visualization, computer graphics and human-computer interaction, in particular volume, flow and particle visualization, hierarchical data structures and adaptive techniques, parallel and hardware-accelerated algorithms, web and mobile graphics, visual analysis of text and social media, as well as user interfaces and assistance systems for the blind.

Thomas Ertl is married and has two children.

Scientific work[edit]

Thomas Ertl is the co-author of over 400 peer-reviewed publications and an active member of program committees of many international graphic and visualization conferences.[1] He served as principal editor of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics from 2007 to 2010[2], and as president of the Eurographics Association in 2011 and 2012.[3] He is Deputy Coordinator of the Cluster of Excellence Simulation Technology and member of the DFG Review Board Interactive and Intelligent Systems, Image and Language Processing, Computer Graphics and Visualisation.[4] From 2013 to 2015 he was Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Stuttgart, from 2015 to 2018 Vice-Rector for Research and Young Researchers, and since 2019 Director of the Cluster of Excellence Data-Integrated Simulation Science (SimTech). In October 2019, he was inducted into the newly founded IEEE VGTC VIS Academy. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Virtual Reality und Visualisierung in Vienna.
