Hemu Village

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Hemu Village (Chinese 禾 木村, hémùcūn) is a village under the jurisdiction of Burqin County, Xinjiang Autonomous Region[1]. Located on the shores of Lake Kanas, it is one of the villages in which the Tuva Chinese ethnic minority is concentrated (Hemu village, Kanas village and Baihaba village). In fact, it is the largest and most distant with a total area of 3,040 square kilometers.

This mountain village, known as the "first village of China", has wooden houses made of trunks that are found around the village, with small bridges and running water.

On July 28, 2019, Hemu was selected as one of the first key rural tourism villages nationwide.

History[edit]

In the past, Altay's ancestors lived at the foot of the mountain and Hemu was only a hunting ground in winter[2]. On Hemu, they used round tree trunks to build a kind of temporary refuge to survive the long winter night, something that is occasionally seen on Hemu.

In 1918, hunters suddenly discovered that there were many white-skinned people coming from the Hemu River. They built houses, planted land, and raised livestock along the river. They called them Baimaozi (白毛子), and later found out that those people came from Russia. After the October Revolution, nobles and officers had nowhere to hide, so they chose this area. Thus, over time, exchanges between them began. For food and clothing, the hunters work for Baimaozi in summer, but continued hunting in winter.

With the time, this place became hunter’s home. They learned to create their own weapons, but the ones they shipped from Belarus were much faster and even better, so these Hemu people traded their precious furs for better hunting tools.

Also, to chase animals in the mountains in winter, they have developed excellent skiing skills. When they hunt large carnivorous brown bears, they often have incidents and get injured. If the external environment had not changed over the years, perhaps their life would not have changed. In fact, government seizure of firearms is the main reason for the changes. The country collected their tools three times: in 1958, 1982 and 1997; and since then their life began to change slowly. Today, agriculture and livestock farming has become the main business of Hemu village.
