Hernâni Marques is a sociologist, neuroinformatics researcher, computational linguist,[1] and hacker.[2] He is a spokesperson for Chaos Computer Club Switzerland (CCC-CH),[3] and sits on the boards of CCC-CH[4] as well as pretty Easy privacy.[5]
Early life and education[edit]
Marques was born in 1984 and grew up in Zürich. He studied computational linguistics at the University of Zurich, where his Master's thesis addressed the risks of mass surveillance through computational linguistics.[2]
Views[edit]
Marques opposed the possibility of electronic voting in Switzerland in 2019, arguing that it may reduce public trust in the voting system since votes are less easy to trace.[1]
During the COVID-19 pandemic in Switzerland, Marques argued against the use of a certificate to demonstrate that someone has been vaccinated, stating that the certificates could easily be faked and that the certificate could provide a false sense of security to people who may not actually be protected from infection. He instead advocated for flattening the curve and keeping some types of business closed to lower the risk of infection. Balthasar Glättli, president of the Green Party of Switzerland, responded by accusing him of aligning himself with Social Darwinism.[6] After the certificate system was put in place with broad public support, Marques accepted the defeat but warned that habituation may lead to continued use of certificates in the future and stated that the system was not effective in fighting the pandemic.[7]
