The Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics provides funding for visiting academics, hosts workshops and colloquia, and supports PhD and MSc programs at the University of Edinburgh's School of Physics and Astronomy.

History[edit]

After the discovery of the Higgs Boson in 2012, predicted by the University's Peter Higgs, the School of Physics and Astronomy created the Higgs Centre to mark "the start of a new era in theoretical physics."[1] The University initially set aside £750,000 for new staff and scholarships.[2] The current director, Professor Einan Gardi, specializes in applications of Quantum Chromodynamics to collider physics.[3] [4]

The Higgs Centre is currently housed in the James Clerk Maxwell Building on the University's King's Buildings campus,[5] but construction on a new £11 million building for the Centre is expected to begin in the future.[6]

Programmes[edit]

The Higgs Centre offers both an MSc and and PhD in theoretical physics.

  • MSc - The Higgs Centre supports two MSc programs in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics. Both programmes began in 2013.[7]
  • PhD - PhD projects in Theoretical Particle Physics, Condensed Matter, and Cosmology are offered.[8]

Rankings[edit]

The University of Edinburgh has been ranked ranked 21st in the world in physical sciences by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings,[9] and ranks in the top 50 universities in the world for physics according to the QS World University Rankings 2018.[10]

Scholarships[edit]

The Higgs Centre offers two Higgs Centre MSc Prize Scholarships awarded to students of any nationality based on academic merit. Each deducts £5,000 from tuition.[11] Highly Skilled Workforce Scholarships covering the full cost of tuition are also available to UK nationals living in Scotland.[12]
