The Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing (CRISP) is a university-level research centre of the National University of Singapore (NUS), established in the early 1990s as a centre for the reception and processing of images from earth observation satellites.[1]

History and funding[edit]

CRISP had its beginnings in 1988, when military scientist Lui Pao Chuen proposed a joint laboratory between NUS and MINDEF to focus on signal processing and its applications. Under the leadership of physicist Lim Hock,[2] the Laboratory for Image and Signal Processing (LISP) was birthed in the Physics Department at the Kent Ridge campus, with support from the National Science and Technology Board (NSTB), the predecessor of A*STAR.

In 1992, founding director Lim Hock’s four-year projected budget of S$32 million was approved by NSTB,[3] and LISP was renamed as the Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing (CRISP). In 1999, the current CRISP premises at block S17 of the Faculty of Science were completed, and CRISP administrative staff and the Data Processing Facility (DPF) moved in.

The current research foci of CRISP encompasses:[5]

Very high spatial resolution imagery[edit]

Research areas include:

  • Mapping at large scales (1:5000 to 1:25,000) with high positional accuracies
  • Detection and enumeration of trees in high resolution imagery of oil palm plantations
  • Extraction of linear features in high resolution imagery

Digital elevation models and 3D modelling[edit]

Research areas include:

  • Generating digital elevation models from high resolution optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data

Cloud-free mosaics[edit]

Multiple polarization SAR[edit]

  • Derivation of environmental information from wide coverage satellite data with tens of spectral bands (such as MODIS, MERIS and GLI)

  • Rapid environmental evaluation using remote sensing data
