Background and release[edit]

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, Shaed decided to scrap their original debut album and start over.[1]

"We finally had a moment to breathe and really took a look at this body of work, and realized it wasn't true to us anymore. So we made the hard decision to scrap it and start all over again, which was both terrifying and freeing. We got the chance to start over and now we have an album that tells our story."

— Chelsea, explaining to Billboard why she scrapped the original debut album, Billboard[1]

On March 8, 2021, the trio announced announced High Dive on their social media accounts.[2] The track listing was revealed on May 8, a week before the album release.[3]

  2. Shaed [@shaedband] (March 8, 2021). "On May 14, we are releasing our debut album High Dive. We've been playing music together for over a DECADE but have never put out a full length album. We wanted to share with you why this moment means so much to us. At the beginning of 2020, before the pandemic, we had a finished album ready to go. When live shows and everything else started shutting down, we had the crushing realization that the music on that album wasn't true to our story. It was made up of songs we'd written in sporadic writing sessions during a two year period of non stop touring. Every song was written in a different city with different people in rushed circumstances. The result was a collection of songs that felt disconnected and meaningless. So with the support of our label, we scrapped the entire album and started writing a new album that was honest in every way – a true representation of the rare highs and tremendous lows we felt in 2020, and an attempt to find joy in the most challenging year of our lives. It's about feeling depressed, getting drunk, finding love, feeling lost, finding confidence, mourning loss, and feeling hopeful. It's our greatest hope that when you listen to High Dive you can relate to these stories, get lost in the music, and sing these lyrics because we've all been through a lot together this year. We owe this album to you and cannot wait to share this part of our world with you. XOXO". Retrieved June 14, 2021 – via Instagram.
