Hilton Ariel Ruiz is an American film director, producer, screenwriter and photographer from New York City, New York.[1]

Early life[edit]

Ruiz grew up in New York City’s Lower East Side.[2] He studied photography at Queensborough Community College and the Fashion Institute of Technology, and studied cinema at New York University and the School of Visual Arts. At Queensborough Community College, Ruiz worked under photographer Jules T. Allen.

Career[edit]

Ruiz is best known for his web series Zombie With A Shotgun (web series), which is set to be adapted into a feature film in 2017, and the 2011 documentary Air: The True Memoirs of Gil C. Alicea.[3] He is also currently directing an adaptation of Francis Levy's novel "Erotomania".

His is the co-editor of "The Forty-Deuce: The Times Square Photographs of Bill Butterworth, 1983-1984," along with Beatriz Ruiz. The book was published by Powerhouse Books in 2012[4] and features over 200 full-color photographs by Bill Butterworth and an introduction by Carlo McCormick.[5]

In 1999, he founded the Chrystie Street Gallery, which he operated and ran until 2007.
