Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology (HiCET) is an autonomous engineering institution situated in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. Established in 2000 under the Hindusthan Educational and Charitable Trust, the institution is permanently affiliated with Anna University, Chennai, and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).[3][4][5]
History and Campus
The institution was established in 2000 by the Hindusthan Educational and Charitable Trust to deliver technical and management education in the Western Region of Tamil Nadu.[6] Located along the Coimbatore Pollachi National Highway at Othakalmandapam, the campus (known as the Valley Campus) comprises academic blocks, specialized computing laboratories, research centers, central libraries, residential facilities for men and women, and sports infrastructure.[7]
Academics
HiCET offers undergraduate (B.E. / B.Tech), postgraduate (M.E., MBA, MCA), and doctoral (Ph.D.) research programmes across various engineering, technology, and management disciplines.[8] Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes are governed through the state-level Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) counselling system conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education, alongside management quota allocations.[9][10]
Accreditation and Recognition
- Approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.[11]
- Granted Autonomous status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and permanently affiliated with Anna University, Chennai.[12]
- Accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an 'A++' Grade.[13][14]
- Multiple undergraduate engineering programmes are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).[15]
Student Life
The college hosts student chapters of various technical and professional organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Computer Society of India (CSI), and the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE).[16] Extracurricular and community initiatives on campus are organized through the National Cadet Corps (NCC), the National Service Scheme (NSS), and annual inter-collegiate technical symposia.[17]
Controversies
2026 Student Murder Case
In August 2026, the institution received widespread regional and national media attention following the fatal assault and death of a 19-year-old engineering student, K. Amudhan, from Kallakurichi.[18]
The Chettipalayam police registered a case and subsequently detained and arrested several students and suspects involved in the incident.[19][20] Law enforcement authorities subsequently clarified that preliminary investigations ruled out narcotics-related motives regarding the altercation.[21]
Following the incident, the college administration issued a statement clarifying that the altercation had occurred outside the campus premises and cooperated with law enforcement by providing student records to assist the investigation.[22][23]
