Hiroshi Kakazu (Japanese: 嘉数 啓; born 1942) is a Japanese economist and island scholar. He was born in Motobu, USCAR. He is Professor Emeritus at the National University of the Ryukyus,[1] President Emeritus of the Japan Society of Island Studies,[2] and Chair of the Okinawa Remote Islands Development Panel.
Research[edit]
He is one of the originators of nissology (the study of islands; or 'island studies'). He has written ten single-authored books, including an international award-winning book on the Asia-Pacific. His books on Sustainable Development of Small Island Economies (Boulder & Oxford: Westview Press, 1994), [3] Island Sustainability (Canada: Trafford Publishing, 2012), Okinawa in the Asia Pacific (The Okinawa Times, 2012), [4] An Introduction to Nissology (Tokyo: Iwanami-shoten, 2017: 2017 Iha Fuyu Award), and Nissology (Tokyo: Kokon-shoin, 2019) which was translated into Korean, are books to consult on Nissology, with special reference to Japan and Okinawa.

Kakazu studied at the University of the Ryukyus (Japan), the University of Nebraska (USA), and the London School of Economics (UK).
