History House Museum
History House Museum is a collection of photographic and archival records of the West Coast of New Zealand.[1]
Building
It was housed in the former Grey County Council chambers building, constructed in 1924, in Gresson Street, Greymouth,[2] until February 2017 when the building was closed as it was deemed non-compliant with current earthquake-prone building standards.[3][4] The collection was moved to the Grey District Library. As of 2018, it has been decided that the building will be strengthened.[5]
Collection
The collection of photographs covers views of Greymouth, gold mining, coal mining, timber milling, shipping, living conditions and social history. In 1998, the Grey District Council presented the museum with a complete set of surveying instruments. The historical items were believed to have belonged to engineer John Higgins, and some of the earliest may have been passed to him by Grey District's first engineer Edward Butler, who died in 1884. The instruments are notable as examples of fine machining before the turn of the century.[6][7]
The collection also includes some early coal-mining maps, donated by the Department of Commerce.[8]
In 1999, the museum held an exhibition of ten Charles Goldie reproductions, on loan from the son of the proprietor of the by-then defunct Golden Eagle Hotel.[8]
In 2018, items relevant to other West Coast regions were sent to museums in Hokitika and Westport.[9] The region's history of greenstone jade working was also well represented.[10]
