There is a large Mexican population in California. Mexicans are the largest Latino ethnic group in the state.[1]

History[edit]

The incorporation of California meant that the thousands of Mexicans there could become citizens of the United States of America or could return to Mexico. Mexican people who had long been established in California struggled to retain their culture, property, and political influence as Americans set their sights on the territory.[2]
