Hockley-In-A-Hole is a historic slave plantation located in Annapolis, Maryland in Anne Arundel County. The historic estate was a starting point for the prominent Dorsey Family of the region. The original land tract was taken by Edward Dorsey who immigrated to Anne Arundel. Edward Dorsey's Sons Edward, Joshua, and John patented 400 acres of the property on August 25, 1664 as "Hockley-In-The-Hole". In 1664, the land was transferred from Edward Dorsey to his brother John for 24,000lbs in tobacco.[1] The first of three structures was built by Hon. John Dorsey for his brothers and son, Caleb Dorsey. The first structure was destroyed by fire in the early 1700s, followed by a second "hockley" burned in 1860. A third reconstruction used portions of the 1730 structure as a kitchen. [2]
