Hoichoi (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is an Indian Bengali language subscription video on-demand over-the-top streaming television service owned by Shree Venkatesh Films.[1] The service primarily distributes films and television series produced or co-produced by Shree Venkatesh Films or Hoichoi itself, with the service also hosting content from other providers, content add-ons, video rental and purchasing services.[2]
Hoichoi was launched on 20 September 2017.[3] SVF appointed Rediffusion Y&R as the creative agency behind Hoichoi, which had been responsible for naming it as well as creating its brand visual identity and advertisement campaigns. Chaired by Vishnu Mohta, Hoichoi was co-founded by Mohta along Shrikant Mohta and Mahendra Soni.[4]
History
Vishnu Mohta, Shrikant Mohta and Mahendra Soni of Shree Venkatesh Films launched Hoichoi on 20 September 2017.[5] In May 2023, Hoichoi announced its movie production wing titled "Hoichoi Studios".[6][7] Shri Swapankumarer Badami Hyenar Kobole (2024) marked the first theatrical release of Hoichoi Studios.[8]
In March 2025, Hoichoi launched a new format titled "Hoichoi TV+" to bridge the gap between TV and OTT.[9] Hoichoi TV+ will follow a multi-episode format, where episodes will be released at regular intervals, but they will be available on demand.[10]
Content
Hoichoi is a Bengali language OTT platform and de-facto focusses on the production and distribution of content created in Bengali language.[11] It also dubs a large portion of its shows in Hindi. English subtitles are available in all of its original productions, including web series, short films, documentaries and movies.[12]
Subscription
Streaming facilities
Hoichoi has partnered with aggregation services like Amazon Prime Video and local telecom providers for providing bundle OTT services.[13] As of 2025, current partnerships include JioFiber, Airtel XStream, Alliance Broadband, Wishnet and Meghbela Broadband. JioFiber customers on Silver and above plans gets access to Hoichoi through their Jio Set-Top box. It can also be streamed on the JioTV+ app.[14] Besides, Hoichoi content can also be streamed on Amazon Prime Video against a subscription.[15]
Partnerships
Technological partnership
In October 2016, Hoichoi collaborated with US technological firm "Viewlift" to create the official website and app for Hoichoi.[16] "Viewlift" is the technological and distribution partner of Hoichoi worldwide. They overview and regulate the development of full service video infrastructure and support the distribution, consumption and monetization of the company.[17]
Developmental partnership
"Rediffusion Y&R" was appointed as the developmental firm behind Hoichoi. They coined the name of the platform. Rediffusion Y&R created the brand's visual identity and takes care of its visual campaigns.[18]
International ventures
Bangladesh
In 2019, Hoichoi got 1000 subscribers from digital subscriptions via international credit cards at an annual plan of ৳499. Hoichoi partnered with "Meena Bazaar" to sell offline subscription cards for Hoichoi Bangladesh. Three months and twelve months plan's subscription cards were made available at 17 outlets of Meena Bazaar in Bangladesh. Through similar partnerships with other companies, Hoichoi gathered 21,000 Bangladeshi subscribers in 2019.[19]
Hoichoi also signed an agreement with "Gadget & Gears" for the distribution of scratch cards in Bangladesh. For buying a smartphone from Gadget & Gears, the customers would receive free Hoichoi subscription cards offering 3 months to 1 year's subscription.[20]
Post 2020, Hoichoi partnered with multiple telecom companies and broadband providers in Bangladesh such as GrameenPhone, Link3, Robi and Banglalink. Despite the debit card, credit card and digital wallet facilities; scratch cards remain as the prevalent mode of payment for buying a subscription.[21]
Middle East
In an interview with Business Today, Hoichoi co-founder Vishnu Mohta said that in the Middle East, they are taking a career billing approach for the Bengali users to avail a Hoichoi subscription. They are trying this method of payment since a large number of the Bengali speaking audience in the Middle East are migrant workers from Bangladesh and don't have access to digital payments.[22]
South East Asia
In 2022, Hoichoi decided to expand its viewer base in South East Asia, particularly in Malaysia and Singapore. Hoichoi has partnered with local telecom and broadband service providers like "Sohoj" in Malaysia and is undergoing discussion with different telecom service providers, for a similar partnership in Singapore.[23]
Revenue and user base
In an interview in September 2020, Vishnu Mohta of Hoichoi claimed to have more than 13 million paid subscribers worldwide, with 40% of its subscribers from overseas.[24]
In an interview in 2022, Mohta claimed that 40% of their revenue comes from international customers.[25]
In 2023, Mohta claimed a 40% increase in direct subscription and an average engagement time per user at 59 minutes.[26]
