Holding space

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

"Holding space" is a concept meaning to create a safe space for someone by being present for them physically, emotionally, and mentally without judgment.

History

The term was originally popularized by Heather Plett, a writer from Canada, in a then-viral 2015 blog post. Plett described the term as: "being willing to walk alongside another person in whatever journey they're on, without judging them, making them feel inadequate, trying to fix them, or trying to impact the outcome."[1][2]

The term is often used in the context of therapy where the concept of safe spaces is a common theme.[1][3]

The phrase gained rapid popularity in November 2024 following an interview between Tracy E. Gilchrist and Wicked actresses Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.[4]
