Holland Healthcare Inc.

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Holland Healthcare is an Australian-American company that develops illuminating medical examination scopes that light up the interior of the mouth, throat, or wound for accurate examinations for medical, dental, and speech-pathology professionals and their patients.[1] Holland Healthcare was founded in 2010 by Jennifer Holland. Holland Healthcare's products are designed to enhance existing medical devices and create digital AI diagnostic solutions.

History[edit]

Holland Healthcare Inc. was founded in 2010 after Jennifer came home from a trip to the doctor with her 15-month-old baby, who was suffering from a sore throat.[2] Jennifer and her baby endured a traumatic experience at the doctor; the doctor asked Jennifer to restrain her baby while he attempted to examine the baby’s throat with a wooden tongue depressor in one hand and a flashlight in the other hand. Determined that there must be a better way, Jennifer went home and created the Throat Scope.[3]

In 2011, Jennifer received the "What's your big idea?" prize of $50,000 from the Queensland government, which allowed her to finalize the prototype for Throat Scope.

In 2015, Jennifer took Throat Scope on the TV show Shark Tank, which helped accelerate Throat Scope's development.[4] Steve Baxter invested $76,000 for a 30 percent stake in the company and five percent royalties on her sales up to the investment amount. Shark Tank also increased the brand awareness for her product, which helped when she officially launched the product later that year.

In 2018, Jennifer took her Throat Scope to Pitch Tank in Las Vegas, which she won.[5]

In 2022, Jennifer was a winner of the Denobi Awards the premier celebration recognizing and honoring excellence in dentistry because of the work of Holland Healthcare.[6]

Medical Devices[edit]

TelScope Telehealth System[edit]

The TelScope Telehealth System was invented by Jennifer in 2017, again after a doctor visit with her child.[7] Making appointments with the doctor, taking all four children there and back, and hoping they were not bringing new germs home with them, was difficult, to say the least. After one appointment where one of her children had tonsillitis, she thought there had to be an easier way to show a doctor a sore throat or tooth from her home. Thus, the TelScope Telehealth System was born. Jennifer created a system that could be easily connected to a smartphone for a virtual appointment.

“Examine, Capture, Connect.” The TelScope Telehealth System is an illuminated intraoral examination tool that transforms any smart device into an intraoral camera through an examination tool and the TelScope app. The system is also available through the Teledentix provider app.[8]

In addition to the dental uses for TelScope are also used to help with speech-pathology and speech therapy.[9]

TelScope App[edit]

The TelScope App works with the TelScope device, providing "superior intraoral and intra-aural images and video for telehealth connection," specialist referral, remote patient care, post-operative monitoring, and patient files for electronic medical record.[7] The TelScope app’s software is programmed to capture superior, medical-grade quality intraoral image and video and it has "an algorithm to allow intra-orifice measurement."[7]

Pap Scope[edit]

In 2018, a hospital in the UK approached Holland Healthcare Inc. wanting a device similar to Throat Scope that would illuminate the vagina during a pap smear exam to improve accuracy. The Pap Scope was created as a device that works with reusable speculums to better illuminate the vagina.

Wound Scope[edit]

In 2016, after the Throat Scope began to gain traction, Jennifer invented the Wound Scope because nurses asked if the Throat Scope was capable of illuminating the inside of a wound. The Wound Scope has a ruler to measure the depth of a wound and light up the inside so they can clearly see the wound during cleaning.

Ear Scope[edit]

Jennifer also invented the Ear Scope in 2016, and her child was again the inspiration. He had grommets, or tubes in his ears, and one had fallen into the ear canal, where doctors were unable to see it until she went to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor who could perform a more thorough exam. After that, Jennifer realized that otoscopes only had one stream of light, which limited their visibility. She then began working on creating an otoscope that could illuminate the entire ear.
