Hooman Derakhshandeh(painter)

Hooman Derakhshandeh (born January 1980 in Tehran, Iran) is an Iranian painter and visual artist. He paints about identity, memory, and social issues, especially about women’s roles in Iran. He mixes photo-based painting with symbolism and expressive figures.[1][2][3][4][5]

Early life

Derakhshandeh studied at the Tehran School of Visual Arts and got a diploma in 2002. He earned a bachelor's degree in painting in 2023.

Career

He started working as an artist in the late 1990s. His first solo show was called Paradox in 2009. His art has been shown in Iran, the UK, France, UAE, Sweden, Turkey, and the US.

He was a finalist in an Austrian artist program in 2012 and was selected for an art contest in Los Angeles. He joined the Iranian Painters Society in 2018.

Style

His paintings often show women looking straight at the viewer. He uses traffic signs, ID patterns, and notes in the paintings to talk about social rules for women. One series, Mystic Presence, used dark figures with street signs to show limits in public life.

Reviews

Critics say his work challenges the “male gaze.” In 2018, Paris Tanzifi wrote that the women in his paintings “are not passive” and “look back at the viewer.”
