Howard Handler (born May 22, 1961) is an American entertainment and sports executive, and the President of 313 Presents.[1], a live entertainment company located in Detroit, Michigan.

313 Presents promotes and produces concerts, theatrical productions, sporting events and family shows at Little Caesars Arena, Fox Theatre, Comerica Park, DTE Energy Music Theatre, Meadow Brook Amphitheatre and Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre[2]. Howard is responsible for 313 Presents’ vision and strategy as well as guiding the company’s operations, partnerships and business development initiatives[3]

Handler has held leadership positions at Major League Soccer, Madison Square Garden, Virgin Mobile, the National Football League, MTV, Saturday Night Live and The Quaker Oats Company[4].

Biography

Handler was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and is the son of a lawyer (Wallace) and a research librarian (Marlene). He attended the University of Michigan School of Literature, Science and the Arts and the Ross School of Business, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1983 and a Masters in Business Administration in 1985. Howard spent summers at Camp Tamakwa in Algonquin Park, Ontario (founded by his Great Uncle Lou Handler) and Camp Nebagamon in Wisconsin.

Howard is married to Wendy. They have two children.

Business concerns

From 2017 – 2019, Handler built and managed a consulting business with a range of clients including the XFL where he created the business plan working with Founder Vince McMahon[5]. Handler also advised a number of private equity and venture capital firms on media and technology deals.

Major League Soccer

From 2011 – 2017, as Chief Marketing Officer, Handler led MLS to unprecedented growth in scale, relevance, and quality...[6] During his tenure, Handler revamped the MLS brand which was recognized as the No. 1 new brand in 2015 by Business Insider[7].

Handler also established MLS’ content strategy, new distribution channels, a centralized data warehouse, and several apps and services including the Emmy-nominated flagship series, MLS Insider[8].

Madison Square Garden Entertainment

From 2009-2011, Handler served as EVP Marketing & Sales where he was responsible for promotion and sales for more than 1,000 live events per year across multiple venues and assets (Madison Square Garden, The Theatre at MSG, Radio City Music Hall, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, The Beacon Theatre, The Chicago Theatre, The Wang Theatre)[9].

EMI Music

From 2008-2009 as EVP Marketing - US, Canada & Mexico, Handler was responsible for implementing a new approach to artist development and revenue growth. Handler developed business and activation plans for over 200 franchise and developing artists across multiple labels and territories including Coldplay, Katy Perry, Depeche Mode, Norah Jones, Van Morrison, Lady A, David Guetta and Keith Urban[10].

Virgin Mobile USA

From 2003-2008 as Chief Marketing Officer, Handler was a key player driving the business from its start-up phase to profitability and an IPO on the New York Stock Exchange in 2007.

Handler created a challenger brand and grew the customer base to over 5 million; earning the JD Power award for the #1 rated pre-paid wireless service two years in a row. During this time retail distribution expanded to 25,000 stores including key partnerships with Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Target.

Handler was part of the team that created the Virgin Mobile Festival at Pimlico in Maryland.

Handler built a corporate development team to launch non-core services including the 2006 launch of SugarMama, the first mobile advertising business from a US carrier.[11]

Handler and his team also launched RE*Generation, Virgin Mobile’s at-risk youth advocacy effort including the designation of November as ‘National Youth Homeless Awareness Month’ by joint resolution of The United States Congress in 2007.

Burly Bear Network

From 2000-2002, Handler was Chief Executive Officer for Burly Bear Network. Discovered by Saturday Night Live founder and Executive Producer, Lorne Michaels, Burly Bear Network was a cable network and marketing services company[12].

Howard expanded the network from 3.5 million students to full national carriage of 86 million households through a strategic partnership with TBS (part of Warner Media and AT&T).

Handler led the sale of Burly Bear to National Lampoon in September 2002[13].

The National Football League

From 1995-2000, Handler served as Senior Vice President of Marketing & Fan Development. Handler pioneered the discipline of fan development, a new movement in sports with a fan first philosophy as the first ever head of centralized marketing for the League[14]

Handler and his team created the NFL’s first strategic branding campaign, Feel The Power. “Thank You, Fans” in January 1999 was recognized as #5 on USA Today’s Super Bowl Ad Meter.

MTV: Music Television

From 1992-1994 as SVP Marketing, Handler created advertising and promotional campaigns for shows including Beavis & Butt-Head, The Real World and the Jon Stewart Show as well as the `92-`94 MTV Video Music Awards and the Peabody Award-winning Choose or Lose voter awareness campaign. Handler also played a central role launching MTV Latino and MTV Asia. Handler was recognized as one of America’s Top 100 Marketers by Advertising Age in 1993.

Broadway Video Entertainment

From 1990-1992 as VP Marketing, Handler launched Saturday Night Live’s first merchandising program, establishing multiple licensees, developing over 200 products. Handler also led the worldwide merchandising campaign for Wayne’s World – The Movie[15]

The Quaker Oats Company

Howard’s career began in Brand Management at Quaker Oats in Chicago, Illinois. Howard developed business and brand development plans for Life Cereal, Quaker Chewy Granola Bars and new products.
