Howse Williams (formerly known as Howse Williams Bowers) is an independent law firm in Hong Kong.[3]

Founded by former partners of Reed Smith Richards Butler in 2012, it is one of the largest independent law firms in Hong Kong and provides full service legal representation across all major practice areas and industry sectors.[1][2]

As of early 2023, the firm has 34 partners and a total headcount of approximately 200.[1][2] It is the second-largest independent law firm in Hong Kong (after Deacons) and amongst the top 10 largest law firms in Hong Kong overall.[4] It is the exclusive Hong Kong member firm of Multilaw, an international professional services network of independent law firms.[5][6]

History[edit]

Following a merger of U.S. law firm Reed Smith and Richards Butler (UK) in London in 2017, Reed Smith merged with Richards Butler Hong Kong in early 2008.[7]

In late 2011, Reed Smith Richards Butler's professional indemnity co-head Chris Howse, corporate partner Chris Williams and insurance litigation partner Kevin Bowers exited Reed Smith Richards Butler to set up their own firm, which was then known as Howse Williams Bowers.[7]

In early 2012, a team of 15 lawyers and 35 support staff from Reed Smith Richards Butler joined the trio at the firm. The trio had since made further recruits from their former firm.[8][9][10][11][12][excessive citations]

In late 2012, the firm moved from its base in Two Exchange Square to Alexandra House in Central, with a view to boosting its headcount in the region.[9]

In March 2019, the firm dropped the "Bowers" in the name after Kevin Bowers left the firm in January earlier that year.[13][14][15]

In May 2021, Howse Williams joined Multilaw as the member firm for Hong Kong. Multilaw is an international professional services network of independent law firms. It was established in 1990 and comprises over 90 member firms in more than 100 countries.[5][6]

Since its establishment in 2012, Howse Williams has grown to be one of the largest independent firms in Hong Kong. As of early 2023, the firm has approximately 100 lawyers (including 34 partners) and a total headcount of approximately 200, making it the second-largest independent law firm in Hong Kong and amongst the top 10 largest law firms in Hong Kong overall.[1][2][4]
