History[edit]
Haldanes was founded in 1975[6] by Warwick Haldane when Hong Kong was still a British colony. Warwick Haldane arrived in Hong Kong in 1971 as a New Zealand qualified barrister and solicitor. In 1975, he started the firm "Haldane & Co” located in the old Edinburgh House, Central after working as a prosecutor in the Attorney General's Chambers in Hong Kong.
Warwick Haldane was joined by Jonathan Midgley[7] in 1978[8] and together they established a criminal law practice which remains today. In 1988 Geoffrey Booth[9] became a partner in the renamed firm known as Haldane Midgley and Booth. Until now, Haldanes is still called Haldane Midgley & Booth in its Chinese name (何敦 麥至理 鮑富律師行[10]).
John McLellan[11] joined Haldanes in 1992 and the firm added a Commercial & Media and Entertainment Department.
Jonathan Midgley and Geoffrey Booth were appointed Solicitors Advocates with higher rights of audience in 2013, which enable them to appear as advocates in all criminal proceedings in the High Court of Hong Kong including jury trials.[12]
In August 2014, three partners Christopher Morley, Anita Chow and Eric Seto left Haldanes to set up their own firm in Hong Kong.[13]
