Ravenscroft & Schmierer, founded in 1985[1], is one of the oldest independent corporate law firms in Hong Kong with a focus on international clients.[2] The firm’s lawyers are qualified in multiple jurisdictions and most of its clients are large and medium-sized companies with an international background. It is the only law firm in Hong Kong with a German desk headed by a lawyer qualified in both Hong Kong and Germany.[3]

History[edit]

Predecessor Firm[edit]

In 1985 when the company was first founded and established by David Ravenscroft, it was initially named Ravenscroft & Co.[4] During this time, Ravenscroft & Co. represented both local and international clients. David Ravenscroft conducted the last successful appeal from the Hong Kong Court of Appeal to the Privy Council in London before the Handover of Hong Kong.[5]

Contemporary Firm[edit]

In 2020, Stefan Schmierer[6][7][8]) was made managing partner, and the firm's name was changed from Ravenscroft & Co. to Ravenscroft & Schmierer. Anna Lau is currently litigation partner and was on the team handling one of Hong Kong's first cryptocurrency-related cases in 2015.[9]

The firm is connected closely with Germany, as it is a member of the German[10] and Austrian[11] Chamber of Commerce and is a member of ADWA (Alliance of German Business Lawyers in Asia). Ravenscroft & Schmierer serves a long list of private clients, most of which are medium-sized companies from Germany and Austria, as well as the German Consulate and the Austrian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, in all aspects of commercial, corporate and tax law. It also maintains connections with other German-speaking independent law firms in Asia and around the world through ADWA and CBBL (CBBL Cross Border Business Lawyers), to deal with multijurisdictional legal advice and disputes.

Recognition[edit]

Ravenscroft & Schmierer is one of the first 140 signatories to the Equal Opportunities Commission’s Racial Diversity & Inclusion Charter for Employers.[12]

Stefan Schmierer is listed as a distinguished practitioner by Asia Law for regulatory work in Hong Kong.[13]
