Hunger strike of political prisoners in Iran 2021, a group of 34 political prisoners from three prisons in Iran launched a 3-day hunger strike to mark Nowruz, the Iranian New Year in 21 March 2021. Their statement protested oppression and was dedicated to freedom and human rights. Among these prisoners were prominent figures such as Keyvan Samimi, Amirsalar Davoudi and Kasra Nouri.[1]
Statement[edit]
Their statement protests “the deadly violence of poverty, repression, and the suffocation and killing of ethnic and religious minorities.” They honor those killed during the Nov 2019 Iran Protests and all those who sacrificed their lives for the wellbeing and freedom of Iran.[2] The signatories paid special respect to "our leaders Navid Afkari, Mostafa Salehi, Mohammad Salas" and thousands of others who stood for the lives of their people and gave their lives in turn.
They also saluted Behnam Mahjoubi, a Gonabadi Dervish political prisoner and other ill prisoners who "melted like candles behind bars" amidst repression, torture, and the denial of medical care.
At the end of the statement, the prisoners emphasized that forced transfers of prisoners, solitary confinement, and many other unjust oppressions did not allow for many other signatories to take part in the statement or Nowruz hunger strike.[3]
The letter, signed by prisoners of conscience currently held in Evin and Fashafouyeh Prisons in Tehran, and Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, directly addresses the Iranian people. "As a tribute to our joint pain and struggle for freedom, democracy, the elimination of discrimination and inequality, and the realization of human rights,” they wrote, “we will go on a hunger strike for three days from the morning of the first day of the 15th century."[4]
