CubaSpaces emerged as a digital-political platform in October 2021. It was created by a group of Cuban dissidents that oppose the regime of Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez and the Communist Party of Cuba, and its members reside in the diaspora and inside the island.

At first, the main purpose was to give visibility to proposals made by the Cuban Civil Society such as the Civic March for Change, which was impulsed by the dissident Group Archipielago on November 20, 2021. Members of CubaSpaces compiled all the information in regards to the rallies held in other parts of the world in an interactive map. Around 124 cities in different countries where Cubans reside, joined the march..[1][2][3][4][5]

History[edit]

Cubans on the island submitted notification letters in advance to the Cuban regime to make the government aware they would peacefully protest on November 20, 2021[6][7]. The main reason was to demand the release of political prisoners and to condemn the human rights violations made by the government against its people.[8]

CubaSpaces would then begin to give visibility to this initiative from its newly created platform not only to those in Havana, also to other cities in the island that were joining such as Pinar Del Rio, Santa Clara, Cienfuegos, Guantanamo, Holguin, Camagüey, Santiago de Cuba, among others.

At that time, Cubans in the diaspora began to identify with this proposal and made public calls for rallies in support of their fellow Cubans in the island. Around 124 cities[5] marched in November 2021 in different countries where Cubans lived, among which can be mentioned Miami[9][10], New York[11], Madrid[12][13], Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Mexico D.F, Montevideo and Toronto. [14]

The CubaSpaces team had the idea of regrouping all this information in an interactive map[15] for greater organization and its Twitter account served as a source of information for different media outlets, NGOs, Cuban influencers, activists and those interested in the subject.[16]

CubaSpaces also began to denounce the human rights violations committed by the Cuban regime, including the threats and arbitrary arrests suffered by dissidents in the island, becoming this later, the main purpose of the initiative.

As the date approached, CubaSpaces extended its audio rooms on Twitter for about 12 hours a day with the ultimate goal to provide the Cuban people and the international community with all the information that was being received from the island[17]. On November 13, 14 and 15, an interrupted transmission was held and connected through several Youtube channels of Cuban influencers such as Roberto San Martin, Los Pichy Boys, Eliecer Avila, Un Asere Pensante[18], La Señora del Canal de las Emociones[19] and Alexander OtaOla with the purpose to share excerpts of these spaces. Approximately 80 thousand persons participated in the spaces.[20]

Having in consideration the great scope achieved by the initiative, its members decided to continue to denounce the current struggles of the Cuban dissidence and the lack of self-expression that's constantly  censored by the state media of the Cuban regime. Since then, the spaces have been held on Twitter every Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. with topics that contribute to empower Cuban citizens through conversations about economic, political and social  issues.

The spaces are an opportunity to encourage citizens to express their views on initiatives that are currently being promoted, such as the Amnesty Bill for the release of political prisoners in Cuba. Experts on different topics are usually invited to share information about immigration, criminal law, human rights, just to mention a few.

On December 10, 2021, CubaSpaces along with other platforms and influencers would join a Mega Space[21][22][23] that would have as guests the relatives of some of the Political Prisoners in Cuba to make their situation visible and give them the opportunity to express themselves to the world, something that the Cuban regime did not allow from its state media.

Jason Miller, CEO of GETTR and former senior advisor to former U.S. President Donald J. Trump met last January 28 in Miami with part of the CubaSpaces team interested in learning first-hand about the work being developed by its founders and the possibility that[24], from its new platform, CubaSpaces could amplify reaching the U.S. public showing, firsthand, how harmful communism would be in the United States.

Another distinctive feature of CubaSpaces has been the denunciations made and alerts sent to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of former communist leaders, spokespersons for the Cuban regime and visible figures of the Castro repressive apparatus who have tried to establish themselves in the United States. Yunior Smith[25][26][27][28], host of Cuban Television, Prosecutor Liomarys V. Fuentes, the former Director of Infrastructure of the Provincial Administration Council (CAP) of the municipality of Güines, are some examples of the main spokespersons of the Cuban dictatorship who have been denounced.

The CubaSpaces team has contributed monetarily and has shown its support by giving visibility to the project of “La Jaba de los Inocentes” [29](The bag of the innocents). An initiative that emerged from the Cuban diaspora to economically help the families of political prisoners on the island by providing food bags to them and their relatives deprived of their freedom, who in many cases were the only economic support that these people had at home.

The Cuban Canadian activist and member of the CubaSpaces team Ismary Bacallao would arrive at the Parliament[30] along with other activists to denounce the Cuban Dictatorship on March 24, 2022. Also, Cubans in The Netherlands, four days later, among them members of CubaSpaces called for a demonstration on March 28, 2022, in front of the city hall of Amstelveen[31][32][33] against an exhibition that was being held in that city against the glorification of Ernesto Guevara "Che" and the Cuban Revolution.

At the beginning of April, a new initiative known as #SOSCuba[34][35] would re-emerge in the social networks with the intention that political decision makers, artists, influencers, media, etc., would know and echo the terrible economic and political situation that the Cuban people are going through, to which CubaSpaces would join and play a leading role from its platforms and calling on the international community to put their eyes on Cuba.
