"Hustlin'" is a hip-hop song recorded by American independent rapper John Anthony. It was released on July 15, 2022 by Villainous Records and Chaos Music Group.[1] The song was the first single released months after John Anthony's previously released solo album "Villaination!".[2] It was produced by music producer Timber, along with exective produced by John Anthony and engineered by Alex Murphy.

John Anthony receives commemorative gold record for Hustlin' on one year anniversary. [3]

Background[edit]

John Anthony announced "Hustlin'" two days prior to its release on social media. The song's hard-hitting bass and motivational lyrics generated well with audiences, stating: "I worked so hard, gotta stay ready when its crunch time / I gotta hit 'em with a bass and punchline..."[4] he raps. The beat was produced by record producer Timber, along with executive produced by John Anthony.[5] He mentions in the song the time apart he'll was planning on taking after the release of the single: "I'm setting aside my pen after this, but don't ever forget I will never retire..."[6] he stated in the second verse. John Anthony also back-references lyrics from "Ballin", rapping "'Cause b*tch I'm ballin' / ice in my veins, you know that I'm ballin' up..."[7], using the same line from the previous major hit-single from 2020.[8] The song has gained over 100,000 worldwide streams[9] and is widely considered John Anthony's most popular song.

Upon it's release on July 15, a music was quickly dropped a few days later. The video shows John Anthony performing on top of a parking garage from the PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.[10] The video has gained over 5,000 views on YouTube. [11]

For the single's one year anniversary, on July 15, 2023, John Anthony received a commemorative gold record plaque for achieving over 50,000 streams on Spotify.[12] Villainous Records first reported by posting a picture of John Anthony holding the framed gold record on Instagram.[13]

Critical reception[edit]

The song received it's fair share of critical reviews, mainly positive remarks from music critics and industry leaders alike. Jeff Baylor of This Rap Sound praised the song: "Uplifting and empowering, John Anthony delivers cadence and rhymes that motivate you to your pulse. The inspirational lyric by lyric storyline and heavy-hitting trumpets drive this song to stardom." Baylor also praised the song's mainstream value. Llewelyn Screen of A&R Factory gave a positive review on the song: "Staying hungry and letting everyone know that he has already seen the sneaky snakes before they saw themselves, John Anthony drops a soldier grind kind of track that shall boom through the speakers just like street tracks should on Hustlin'". Continuing on, she states: "Feeling good and not taking his foot off the gas, John Anthony is in a confident mood and will shake off all the doubters with a potent performance to magnify the pulses of those in the know. This is raw rap with a purpose. Turn him up." [14]
