HISTORY[edit]

HISTORY In 1991 ISCOWA, the International Society for application of mineral WAste materials in Construction (Waste) was founded in Maastricht The Netherlands. Directly after the first international conference on the application of mineral waste materials in construction (known as the international conference WASCON) (recyclingwaste management), the need for an organization was identified by a lot of attendants. This led to the foundation of an internal society according to Dutch Law and ISCOWA is noted in the Dutch Chamber of Commerce. A board, consisting out of three persons was established, and it got the task to get the work started. From the foundation of ISCOWA until 2009 the Chairman of the board was Dr. J.M. (Hans) Goumans. (The Netherlands) From 2009 the Chairman is Prof. dr. C. Vandecasteele (Belgium). The first Treasurer was Ir. J. de Castro (Portugal),from 1997 Ir. J.M. Heynen (The Netherlands)is the Treasurer. As of 2015 the board consists of 9 persons from 5 countries. Members from ISCOWA come from over 40 countries and subscribe on a personal basis. The goal of ISCOWA, as stated in the statutes of the organization, is to gain and to distribute knowledge and know-how in the field of recycling and application of mineral waste materials in construction. The environmental aspects of materials for construction, both virgin materials and re-use and recycled materials are investigated. Background information can be found on the webpage of the society www.iscowa.org.
