Clarence J. McGhee (born May 31, 1990) formerly known as HBK CJ, now known by his stage name ISTHATCJ, is an American independent artist, rapper, songwriter, and performer. He is also well known for his role as a past member of the hip hop group The HBK Gang, also known as Heartbreak Gang.
Early life
Clarence J. McGhee (born May 31, 1990) formerly known as HBK CJ, now known by his stage name ISTHATCJ, is an American independent artist, rapper, songwriter, and performer.
CJ was born and raised in Oakland, California. He has been surrounded by music since his early childhood, which influenced his passion and love for perfecting his craft. CJ is gifted, talented, and bold, but humble and modest; he is undoubtedly a great storyteller and songwriter, using metaphors and imagery to paint a perfect picture for the listener. Today, CJ’s goal as an artist is to show the world how diverse music can be. CJ's energetic, captivating style connects listeners to the pain, struggle, hurt, bad decisions, choices, positive outlook, and life changes within his lyrics. CJ's goal is to promote peace and positivity to his audience. This soulful artist loves to smile, laugh, encourage, and inspire.
“I aspire to inspire everyone who listens to my music to ‘just be themselves’ and pursue any dream you might have, and never forget that you can’t have peace unless you bring peace.” - IsThatCJ
Career
In 2008, CJ joined a group by the name of "The HBK Gang" (HeartBreak Gang). HBK included such names as rapper/producer P-Lo, Iamsu!, Kool John, Skipper, Sage the Gemini, Show Banga, Rossi, and Chief. HBK influenced other talents from the Bay Area that were close to the group, such as Kehlani, G-Eazy, Nef the Pharaoh, Guapdad 4000, and many more. HBK can be considered one of the primary influential collectives in today's generation of Bay Area Music. Today, CJ is well known around the Bay Area for his lyrical diversity and delivery. His lyrical content gains attention from listeners favoring history, politics, love, struggle, and perseverance; yet, his more up-tempo songs include catchy hooks over melodic vocals and clever cadences, gaining the attention of DJs, partygoers, and a huge youth audience. He is most recognized for his verses featured on Iamsu’s “Ralph Lauren Rugby Shit” and “Losin,” which were featured on Billboard.com.
CJ released several notable projects as an artist. With his recognition growing, his hard work has been acknowledged by earning a spot in Thizzler’s Top 10 Freshman Bay Area Prospect list on www.thizzler.com/baf10. Clarence J. explains how his past achievements do not affect his work for the future, and making the Bay Area prospect list is only one of many achievements to come. “I see people in my camp making big moves; the way I see it, this is only one of many more achievements to come.” With that said, CJ will continue to work on several projects, including mixtapes, EPs/albums, and collaborations with various artists and groups.
