Ian Weldon (born 1973) is a British documentary photographer. Although predominately photographing weddings, he describes himself as "not a wedding photographer". In 2019 his work was exhibited at the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol. This was the first ever exhibition of wedding photography in a fine art context.[1]
Biography[edit]
Weldon was born in County Durham in the northeast of England.[2]
Career[edit]
He takes inspiration from the ideas of Martin Parr, Bruce Gilden, and William Eggleston.[2]
Weldon began photographing weddings as a way to earn money to fund his documentary projects, before realising that weddings were an interesting documentary project in themselves.[2] This way of viewing weddings – with no preconceived ideas or forced, unnatural, and staged 'group' or 'couple' shots that have become the norm in traditional wedding photography – has led to more real wedding photographs which capture the real character of the day.[3]
He is represented by DMB Represents.[4]
I Am Not a Wedding Photographer[edit]
Weldon's project I Am Not a Wedding Photographer was exhibited at the Martin Parr Foundation Bristol in 2019.[5] Martin Parr comments that Weldon's "I'm not a wedding photographer" strap line is deceptive, and he is "the most real wedding photographer I have ever encountered".[6]
The exhibition and Weldon's work appeared in publications including The Guardian,[3] Vice,[7] Creative Review,[8] BBC World News,[9] and CNN.[10]
A book of the work Ian Weldon – I Am Not A Wedding Photographer has been co-published by RRB Books and the Martin Parr Foundation.[3]
Other wedding photography[edit]
He photographed the wedding of Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead).[6]
His commissioned work includes that for Huawei, capturing a wedding on their P30 Pro smartphone.[11]
