Ido Roll is an Israeli-Canadian researcher and professor whose area of research focuses on learning analytics, educational technology, and artificial intelligence in education. He is a full professor at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and a Senior Research Director at Educational Testing Service (ETS) Research Institute. Roll is known for his research on self-regulated learning, engagement, and inquiry-based education in digital learning environments.[1]

Education and Academic Career

Roll earned his B.Sc. in Mathematics and Physics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as part of the Talpiot program.[2] He completed his Ph.D. in Human–Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University, where he worked under the supervision of Prof. Kenneth Koedinger and prof. Vincent Aleven.[3]

Following his doctorate, Roll joined the University of British Columbia (UBC) as a postdoctoral researcher, collaborating with Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman on the Science Education Initiative aimed at improving STEM teaching through evidence-based methods.

Roll currently serves as a Full Professor at the Technion, affiliated with both the Faculty of Education in Science and Technology and the Faculty of Data and Decision Sciences. In addition, he is a Senior Research Director at ETS, where he leads initiatives on innovative assessments and learning analytics.[4]

Research

Self-Regulated Learning

Roll's research explores how learners manage their learning using educational resources in digital environments. He has studied help-seeking behaviour, revealing how both the use and avoidance of help can be diagnostic of self-regulated learning skills.[5] His work on adaptive feedback in intelligent tutoring systems demonstrated for the first time that such systems can teach metacognitive skills that transfer to new domains.[6]

He also investigates AI-powered tools for supporting individual and collaborative self-regulated learning.[7]

Learning from Failure

Roll has contributed significantly to the theory of productive failure, which posits that encountering difficulties before receiving instruction can enhance learning outcomes. His work demonstrated that scaffolding learners' failure experiences can improve conceptual understanding.[8] Additional research identified mechanisms through which failure supports learning, such as activation of prior knowledge and attention to critical features of problems.[9]
