Immigration Centers of America LLC was a Virginia-based limited liability corporation, which along with its sister company Immigration Centers of America-Farmville LLC, managed the Farmville Detention Center, which opened in 2010.[1][2]
This was the first private prison in Virginia to detain undocumented immigrants.[3] It was contracted with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain migrants.
In 2020 a coronavirus outbreak infected more than 90% of the inmates, leading Virginia governor Ralph Northam to call for the Trump Administration to intervene in the detention center's management.
By 2023 the facility had "made headlines over the years for poor conditions for those detained."[4] Researchers with the National Immigrant Justice Center gathered records involving the company and its detention facility over the 2019-2023 time period.[5]
In late 2023 the management of Immigration Centers of America passed management over to the "affiliated" company Abyon, LLC, which led to local hearings about the arrangement.[6]
In June 2025 CoreCivic announced "a definitive agreement to acquire" the Farmville Detention Center, closing out the ownership of Abyon and its predecessor, Immigration Centers of America LLC.[7] The purchase price was $67 million.
