History
The Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA) was founded in 1937 by prominent film producers, namely Ardeshir Irani, Chandulal Shah, M.A. Fazal-bhoy, J. B. H. Wadia, Chimanlal B. Desai, Rustom C.N. Broacha, Shankerlal J. Bhatt.
IMPPA was created to serve as a representative body for film producers in India and to protect their interests. Initially, it functioned as a platform for producers to voice their concerns and grievances related to the film industry. Over the years, IMPPA has played a crucial role in shaping the Indian film industry and has actively worked towards the betterment of the industry.
One of the major achievements of IMPPA was the creation of the Film Industry Welfare Trust in 1955. The trust was established to provide financial assistance to members of the film industry during difficult times. IMPPA has also been instrumental in bringing about changes in the film industry, including the introduction of the Film Censorship Act in 1952.
IMPPA has been involved in several landmark events in the Indian film industry. In 1976, IMPPA played a significant role in the creation of the Film City complex in Mumbai, which provided state-of-the-art facilities for film production.
Over the years, IMPPA has also been involved in promoting Indian cinema abroad. It has been a regular participant in international film festivals, and has been instrumental in organizing film festivals in India and abroad.
Today, IMPPA has over 6,000 members and is recognized as one of the most influential bodies in the Indian film industry. Its primary objective remains the same – to protect and promote the interests of film producers in India.
