indiexpo is a hosting service for only free video games (in browser and a downloadable client) with social functions. The initial site launched on March 1, 2011 only in Italy to host indie games developed using Rpg Maker and Game Maker. Now it is translated in over 20 languages and hosts games of all genres.

History[edit]

2011–2015[edit]

Development of indiexpo started in 2011 with a first version titled freankexpo.net announced in the main italian forum about RPG Maker. It included only a public account system and games, uploaded directly by the creators. It was shared only in Italian communities of game developers, especially about RPG Maker and Game Maker. It was quickly translated also in English during May 2011, in German during September 2011, in French during April 2012 and Spanish during November 2012, directly by the first players and game developers that were using the website. During the 2013 the website was growing up quickly and were uploaded a lot of indie games developed also using other game engines , like Unity 3D , Unreal Engine and Construct . The main area of the website was the Game Chart, with all the games order by rating. The games hosted are for all kinds of Operating System and considered one of the main website to download free games for Linux[1]

2016–present[edit]

In January 2016, the website was totally recoded and titled indiexpo, becoming a game portal with a lot of new features and a brand new design[2]. indiexpo started accepting browser-based HTML5 games for upload in February 2016 and during March 2016, was opened an area about the Events. During September 2016, were added the hashtags to use in the games descriptions or comments, new charts and new games statistics[3] During the August 2016 started the test about the indiexpo API[4], allowing games to integrate with the site to create an own online Leaderboard. Inspired by Ready Player One, it started to create Egg Hunting for gamers using the Leaderboard system. During June 2017 was added an "embed features" to embed an browser-based HTML5 games on own blogs or website, with a system like Youtube. In 2017 it was used also by famous game developers that were approaching to the indie game communities, like Mario Marquardt, one of the authors of Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles[5] and Pierre Leclerc, a developer at Electronic Arts[6] During March 2018 was released the first game in exclusive on indiexpo[7] and was improved the machine learning and algorithms to help break gamers’ preconceived notions and find games that they might not have initially chosen. To do this, it looks at games played, rather than relying on broad genres to make its predictions. It is totally translated in over 20 languages, included Japanese, Russian, Chinese and Korean in 2018 and 2019, in Persian in 2020. It introduced also a verification system that provides the site's players with a means to distinguish genuine account holders from impostors or parodies.[8] A gray check mark displayed against an account name indicates that indiexpo staff has taken steps to ensure that the account is actually owned by the person or organization whom it is claimed to represent.

Features[edit]

Machine Learning[edit]

Indiexpo developed and maintains an extensive personalized game-recommendation system based on ratings, comments and activities by the players.

indiepad[edit]

During 2017 was released the Android App titled indiepad to play the games hosted on indiexpo using the smartphone as a gamepad. It had a lot of support on Construct communities[9]

The particularity of this system is the simplicity of implementation, on the developer. Indeed, no game modification is required, but it just needs to get enabled and configured at the time of uploading the video game to the site.

It's indicated for local multiplayer session, enabling up to 4 simultaneous players.

indiexpo Doodle[edit]

Similar to Google Doodle, the indiexpo Doodle is a special, temporary alteration of the logo on indiexpo's search bar intended to commemorate gaming and nerd events, achievements, and notable historical figures into the videogame industry. For example the logo was alternated during the last Chess World Tournament, at the start of the last season of Games of Thrones, during the Atari and Pacman Anniversary, to commemorate Ironman in Avengers: Endgame movie and during the last season of Attack on Titan.

Hashtag[edit]

During the 2016, indiexpo introduced the hashtags, similar to Twitter[10]. Developers and users can group games together by topic or type by use of hashtags – words or phrases prefixed with a "#" sign. Similarly, the "@" sign followed by a username is used for mentioning or replying to other users. It is possible to use them in the games' descriptions, into the comments on into the updates.

Events and Kickstarter Campaigns[edit]

During an italian event to celebrate the works of the Italian indipendent developers, indiexpo joined as media partner to create an area with new italian indie games[11]

indiexpo helped a lot of time small team with their campaigns on Kickstarter. The most relevant were Landflix Odyssey[12], Ayo The Clown[13][14], Justin Wack And The Big Time Hack[15][16],Out of the Hat[17] and recently Freud's Bones[18]
