IndonesiaMUN was born from a concern that Indonesia still lacks a nationwide Model United Nations conference, although students from Indonesia have joined several Model United Nations overseas. The Model United Nations itself was established over 50 years ago. There are more than 400 Model United Nations conferences are held annually worldwide, and more than 1,000,000 people have participated in Model United Nations conferences.

The first IndonesiaMUN was held in 2010 by Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia, making it the premier varsity level Model United Nations conference in Indonesia. It brought together 167 talented university students from renowned universities all over the country and five students from ASEAN. They acted as delegates representing more than 100 different countries in three United Nations councils; they are General Assembly, United Nations Security Council, and ASEAN Regional Forum.

Definition[edit]

IndonesiaMUN is a simulation of the United Nations functions. Participating delegates represent nations as part of United Nations multilateral bodies. Delegates engage in debates concerning international affairs faced by the global community to reach a joint resolution.

IndonesiaMUN connects the Indonesian youth to the United Nations, educates them in global issues and the process of multilateral diplomacy. Participants are given opportunities to further develop their competences in diplomacy, debate, and networking through interactions with high-profile speakers and fellow delegates. For the Indonesian nation itself, IndonesiaMUN offers a chance in formulating solutions for the global issues the world faces now and in the future.

Roadshow[edit]

IndonesiaMUN committee has visited eight universities in six cities on May and June 2010: Institut Teknologi Bandung (Bandung), Universitas Padjadjaran (Bandung), Universitas Katolik Parahyangan (Bandung), Universitas Diponegoro (Semarang), Universitas Gadjah Mada (Yogyakarta), Universitas Udayana (Denpasar), Universitas Andalas (Padang), and Universitas Hasanuddin (Makassar). This roadshow is aimed to introduce IndonesiaMUN through seminars to potential delegates.

Workshop[edit]

IndonesiaMUN Workshop I was a workshop to introduce Model United Nations in general and IndonesiaMUN in particular. This workshop was held on July 20–21, 2010 in Pusat Studi Jepang (PSJ) University of Indonesia, a few months before IndonesiaMUN Conference. IndonesiaMUN Workshop I was aimed to be participated by Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia students and potential IndonesiaMUN participants. However, it was open for public.

Conference Opening Ceremony[edit]

IndonesiaMUN Conference was started with opening ceremony on October 24, 2010 at Balai Sidang University of Indonesia. The participants enjoyed watching traditional dance performed by Komunitas Tari Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia. Afterwards, Dean of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia Bambang Shergi Laksmono and Director of United Nations Information Center for Indonesia (UNIC) Michele Zaccheo gave opening speeches.

Studium Generale[edit]

Some experts gave lecture to enrich the knowledge of delegates and observers and aid them about the latest progress of nuclear development for peaceful use. They were ex Indonesia's Minister of Defense and Security Juwono Sudarsono, Director of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Maryam Ayuni, Vice Dean of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia Edy Prasetyono, and International Relations academics Bantarto Bandoro. It took place at Balai Sidang University of Indonesia on October 24, 2010.

Plenary Seminar and Committee Simulation[edit]

This session aimed to introduce and review IndonesiaMUN Conference policy, so that the delegates understand the entire process of committee sessions. There were specific rules regarding voting procedure, drafting documents, and raising amendments as well as question and answer session.

Plenary Seminar was succeeded by Committee Simulation, where the delegates were expected to follow the directors. The committee simulation aimed to familiarize delegates with parliamentary procedure. IndonesiaMUN committee was trying out each phases of procedure playing on fictional-hypothetical case and was running through the whole procedure of Model United Nations.

Both session were conducted at University of Indonesia, October 24, 2010.

UN Day Celebration[edit]

IndonesiaMUN was organized to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the United Nations on October 25, 2010. Cooperating with the United Nations Information Centre for Indonesia (UNIC), each of IndonesiaMUN delegate was invited to attend the UN Day celebration at Sultan Hotel. The festivity of the standing reception is completed by guest of honors composed of ambassadors, diplomats and senior officials from Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This event was thrown in collaboration with various United Nations System in Indonesia. This event provided the delegates with once-in-a-lifetime experience to engage in discussion with real ambassadors and diplomats and enabling networking session.

Cultural Night[edit]

Cultural Night was dedicated to celebrate the diversities especially in the context of Indonesia. Delegates were brought to the setting of cultural heritage that heavily demonstrates the richness of Indonesia's culture and tradition. Delegates performed at the session of Talent Show for local specialties such as dancing, singing, folklore or traditional games. This activity might be done in groups. The delegates also enjoyed an ethnic music performance from Tembang Pribumi. This event was held at Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia on October 26, 2010.

Committee Session[edit]

IndonesiaMUN Committee Session was held at University of Indonesia Depok, on October 23–27, 2010. The conference's tagline was Challenging Future Challenges: Bringing Diplomacy Forward. The delegates were divided into three committees; 102 participants in General Assembly, 15 participants in United Nations Security Council, and 50 participants in ASEAN Regional Forum. The conference's main topic was nuclear energy, which each committee concerned on different focus. The General Assembly committee discussed about maximizing the use of nuclear as well as minimizing its harm through humanitarian analysis. Another committee, United Nations Security Council, reviewed the determination of UN's position to Iran's nuclear ambition, whereas the ASEAN Regional Forum was finding the consensus in responding North Korea Nuclearization and Nuclear Terrorism.

The joint resolution generated from these committee sessions was submitted to Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and United Nations Information for Indonesia (UNIC).

Closing Ceremony[edit]

The closing ceremony – held at Balai Sidang University of Indonesia on October 27, 2010 – was the peak of IndonesiaMUN for the whole week. This was the conclusion of Challenging Future Challenges: Bringing Diplomacy Forward. The board of directors presented awards to acknowledge the delegates who have shown their best performance during each committee. There were four awards given in each committee: Best Regional Delegation, Best Delegate, Outstanding Delegate, and Honorable Mention. There were slide of images that encapsulate delegates' thrilling performances during the week on and off committee session as the conclusion of the reflection of the week. On the closing ceremony, Anka & Friends, an acoustic band from Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia performed before saying farewell to organizing committee and fellow delegates.
