The Indonesian National Orchestra (INO) is a contemporary Indonesian orchestra founded in 2010 by composer and ethnomusicologist Franki Raden. It aims to develop an orchestral platform rooted in the diversity of Indonesian indigenous musical traditions. INO features musicians and instruments from various regions of Indonesia and presents works that blend traditional and contemporary styles.
Background
INO was established to present Indonesian music in a format similar to Western orchestras, while emphasizing the country’s indigenous instruments and aesthetics. Each INO performance draws from musical traditions of specific ethnic or regional groups, incorporating spiritual and ritual elements influenced by local beliefs, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam.[1]
The orchestra was founded based on three pillars identified by Raden: musical aesthetics, the creative economy, and cultural diplomacy. INO also serves as a vehicle to promote Indonesia’s national motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika ("Unity in Diversity").[1]
Performances
INO debuted on 12 May 2011 at the Balairung Sapta Pesona in Jakarta, with 60 musicians playing 45 types of traditional instruments.[2]
The orchestra has since performed internationally at:

Media coverage
The Indonesian National Orchestra has received national and international media attention. In Kompas, Franki Raden stated that INO aims to "unify Indonesia's diverse musical traditions on an international stage," emphasizing music as a form of cultural diplomacy.[4] Tempo highlighted INO's 2025 European tour as “a rare showcase of Indonesia's cultural depth across borders,” noting performances in Poland, Germany, and the Netherlands.[5]
In 2019, the Indonesian National Orchestra, represented by music director Franki Raden, participated in the International Dombyra Festival in Atyrau, Kazakhstan. The event brought together musicians from several countries to promote traditional instruments and cultural dialogue. INO’s involvement underscored Indonesia’s commitment to intercultural exchange through indigenous music traditions.[6]
In its review of INO's Gayatri, SeeingDance described the performance as “mesmerizing and deeply rooted in ritual.”[7]
