Infermedica is a Poland-based healthcare IT company, that develops medical software based on artificial intelligence technologies. It creates decision support systems for triage and preliminary medical diagnosis.[1][2]

The company was initially supported by the European private and institutional investors such as RTAventures, InnovationNest[3] and Venture Inc[4][5] and is a part of a startup healthcare accelerator DreamIT Health based in Philadelphia.[6] In 2019 Infermedica raised $3.65 million during late-seed round funding, backed by Karma Ventures, DreamIt Ventures, Inovo Venture Partners and Müller Medien.[7]

Solution[edit]

The company core solution is a symptom checker platform for patients that uses AI to perform a preliminary diagnostic interview. The AI suggests specific actions to take, such as visiting or calling a doctor, self-care treatment, or going to an emergency department.

Infermedica has three SaaS solutions:

  • Symptom Checker - a platform for symptom checking and clinical decision support,
  • Call Center Triage platform - cloud-based software to support operators in making triage recommendations,
  • Infermedica API[8] - open developer portal that allows integrating the diagnostic engine into 3rd party software.[9]

Technology[edit]

Company develops online diagnostic platform.[10] Infermedica’s technology is supported by two primary components: the inference engine and the medical knowledge base. The system uses a reasoning engine based on multiple Bayesian networks.[11] The medical knowledge base is developed and curated by the team of doctors and data extraction algorithms.

Implementations[edit]

Infermedica has been implemented commercially by companies, such as Allianz, Dovera,[12] Everyday Health, Médis, or Taipei Medical University Hospital.[13]

Infermedica is used as one of the providers for Microsoft Healthcare Bot, a platform to create virtual health assistants, that offers built-in healthcare-specific use cases and a triage engine to check symptoms in 17 languages.[14] [15]

Controversies[edit]

There are several concerns raised against using artificial intelligence tools (the same as Infermedica's) in healthcare. Frequently raised issues include the risk of biased data being reflected in the algorithms,[16] ethical issues around using patient data,[17] or the lack of empathy and sensitivity towards the patient.[18]
